She would provide us with musical instruments, such as kazoos, bongos, taps to put on our shoes and the record player with our favorite artists records to sing to. Each of us would take our turns performing our particular talent as the rest of us would sit in the audience. The audience would vote after each performance, using cards from 1 5 to cast their votes. My mother or oldest sister would keep up with tallying the votes until everyone had completed their performance. The person with the highest score would then get to do another performance, which would always receive a standing ovation.
I will never forget the year that I won. I recited the words to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and had a headdress made of aluminum foil with little stars taped to wire, shooting out of it. My sisters standing on a couch behind me, covered with blankets, assisted my performance by throwing little colorful stars over my head so that they would fall around as I recited my poem. I was quite the princess on that day!
