Have a Pet Day

By Donna L Montaldo, About.com

This is a fun activity to do with the neighborhood. For children who do not have pets, encourage them to bring their favorite stuffed animal or a picture of their "some day" pet cut from a magazine.

We used to demonstrate a particular trick that our pet could perform. For animals that were not performers, the children would often read aloud the reasons their pet was the best of the bunch. Our mothers had cute baskets full of animal toys, treats and other various animal related items to give as a parting gift at the end of the day.

Other ideas for pet day:

  • Contact a senior citizens home and arrange to bring the “pet day” to them.
  • Have a “pet related” scavenger hunts for blankets, towels, and bowls and donate it to the local pet shelter.
  • Make cat toys from yarn and dog toys from old socks, and donate them to the local pet shelter.
  • String cereal onto an old Christmas garland and hang it for the birds to eat.
  • Have an art contest, where children submit a drawing of their favorite animal.
Pet day was always a special day for us, reminding us of how much pets enriched our lives.
