Consignment Shopping Saves You Money

What You Want to Know About Buying Slightly Used Clothing and Goods

By Donna L Montaldo, About.com

As the Internet grows, so does the opportunity to shop a more extensive line of secondhand products compared to what your local store may carry.

Buying at secondhand stores offers thrifty shoppers a wonderful way to extend their buying dollars. For the newly pregnant mother, maternity clothing is abundant. Brides on a budget can find beautiful wedding dresses at a 90 percent savings. Parents can also find a huge selection of slightly used baby clothing online at a fraction of the retail costs.

If you have expensive taste and like to fill your closet with top designer clothing but don't like to pay retail, then shopping resale will be a nice surprise for you. Imagine getting an Escada Couture suit for under $500! I did and I feel like a million dollars in it every time I have an opportunity to wear it.

Consignment Shopping for the Home

There are other kinds of products available other then just clothing. Many consignment shops specialize in home furnishings, art, exercise equipment, musical instruments, fine jewelry, bridal wear, sports equipment, guns, and more. In fact, anything that you want could probably be found in a consignment shop, somewhere.

Online Resale Shops

If you live on a tight budget or just enjoy finding a great bargain, then browsing the online resale shops, local consignment and thrift shops, or even discovering new ones in places you plan on visiting, might turn out to be a fun new hobby for you.

Tips on Shopping Resale Shops

When shopping in a resale shop you have the advantage of giving the item you are purchasing a thorough examination. Unfortunately when shopping online you have to trust what the person selling the item is telling you. If they say that there is some imperfection on the item you are interested in, ask them to take a close-up picture of the damaged area and email it to you.

Most resale shops have pretty tough standards of what merchandise they will sell in their stores, but that doesn't mean that a small snag or stain might exist. Don't be shy about asking for more details if this is the case with something you are interested in. Remember, "slightly damaged" is in the eye of the beholder.

Cautions

When you are shopping for baby furnishings, toys, clothes or anything related to children, make certain to be up on the latest recalled merchandise. For basic safety guidelines, review this article, The Thrift Store Safety Checklist before purchasing cribs, car seats, child barriers and other potentially hazardous child products.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has a current listing of Infant/Child Product Recalls (not including toys) and Toy Hazard Recalls as well as other non-child related product recall information. Also, Recalls.gov has a complete list that is easy to access.

Recycle Your Own Items Into Cash

Taking your unwanted items to a local consignment shop is a great way to recycle spent money. Some online stores also accept items for listing. If you do list an item with an online store or local store, be sure to read and fully understand all contract terms.
