After being bombarded with customer complaints about the hike in this year's holiday layaway service fee, Walmart decided to lower it from $15 to $5, which was the amount charged last year. However, unlike last year, a $5 Walmart gift card will be given back to customers who pay off their layaways on time.

Toys R Us has revamped its layaway policy this year to compete with Walmart. Customers placing items on layaway before October 31 will not be charged any fee. After that, the layaway policy will return to its normal $5 fee.

Planning a holiday vacation? Sears now has vacation packages that can be placed on layaway through SearsVacations.com. Customers are required to put 10% down on a vacation or cruise package and finish paying for it before they take the trip.
