Bargain Tip: Find Super Cheap and Free DVD Movies

Tuesday September 23, 2008
A growing destination for anyone looking for cheap entertainment is Redbox - the DVD self-service kiosks with $1 per night newly released movie rentals.

The first kiosks appeared in 2002 in select McDonald's restaurants and have since branched out into grocery stores, pharmacies and convenience stores. By February 2008, Redbox surpassed Blockbuster in the number of locations across the U.S.

What makes Redbox unique is not only the inexpensive $1 per night DVD rental price, but also its self-service rent-and-return anywhere capability. Mix this with additional money-saving promotional code offers and Redbox has quickly become a favorite for bargain hunters. To receive promotional codes for free DVDs, you can sign up with your email address at the Redbox website. Also, if you are looking for a promotional code for free DVD rentals from Redbox, the Inside Redbox and RedboxCodes websites have ongoing codes posted.

How to Locate a Redbox

To locate a Redbox in your area or to an area you'll be travelling to, enter the zip code or address on the Redbox kiosk search page.

Redbox Basics

  • New DVD movies are added every Tuesday.
  • Up to 70 - 200 titles are available.
  • Rental fee is $1 per night with the rental period ending the following evening at 9 p.m.
  • There is no late fee. Each night you keep the DVD you are charged an additional $1.00 plus tax.
  • Payments can be made with credit cards or debit cards.
  • Returns can be made at any Redbox kiosk.

Renting DVDs

Redbox works basically like a touch screen vending machine. You select the movies that you want, swipe your credit card, enter your zip code and the movie comes out of a slot. There is no receipt printed although you can enter your email address and one will be emailed to you.

Online DVD Reservation Options

At the Redbox website you can browse current movie titles, reserve your selection and pick up the movie at your nearest Redbox kiosk. Unfortunately promotional codes for free DVDs cannot be used when reserving online.

Redeeming a Promotional Coupon Code

  • Touch - RENT WITH A PROMO CODE - located in the lower left-hand corner of the screen.
  • Enter the code.
  • Touch your DVD selection.
  • Then touch - RENT DVD.
  • Make your payment with your credit card.
Tip: To use the promotional codes more than one time, enter a different credit card.

Returning DVDs

Returning your DVD is simple. You touch the - RETURN DVD - section on the screen and place the DVD into the robotic slot. In order for the barcode to be read for proper return credit, follow the instructions on how to place the DVD into the slot. The machine will reject the return until the DVD is placed in the proper position.

Beware of Long Lines

Because selection and checking out is done at the same time, the wait in line can be long. This can be particularly annoying when all you want to do is return a movie. Hopefully new phases of the Redbox kiosks will include a separate return robotic slot.

Blockbuster Announces Kiosks Plans

The success of Redbox has not gone unnoticed by the popular entertainment company, Blockbusters. Blockbuster announced its plans to develop its own DVD vending kiosks. According to the company's press release, 50 Blockbuster-branded kiosks will be installed by the end of 2008. The pilot vending kiosks will initially offer DVD rentals, but the machines will allow for future applications', including digital downloads, and other services, such as sales of DVDs and video games. The company did not announce the markets or site locations for the first units.

Hi Donna,

I love watching movies, especially with my family. My 21-year-old son who recently moved away from home, introduced me to RedBox. I checked, and sure enough, we have two of them in my hometown.

The service is great and you can’t beat the price! And by using the updated coupon codes, how does FREE sound to you?

There are two negative points I have found.

1. If your DVD is damaged or won’t work–you can’t run it by your local video store and get another one.

2. Depending on the location, you may have to return the DVD in an inside location. I liked the fact that I could simply drive up my local movie rental store and slip the DVD in the slot. In my town, you must go inside the grocery stores in order to return the product. Not a good thing if you are in your pj’s!!!

We love the convenience of redbox! We had one within walking distance and used it all the time. We dont have one close to our new house and miss it now.

Red Box is as described. All locatons can be found on redbox.com. Some are outside and some are inside. Return DVDs to any redbox. Another source of FREE DVDs is your library system. I order on line from over 200 libraries and have the DVD delivered for local pick up at my local library. The library calls when it arrives and I may keep it for 7 days for a buck. If I pick up a TV series DVD, documentary or how to DVD, it is free. Library DVDs are seldom if ever the newest hottest ones. If they are, there is a long waiting list. I buy used DVDs of TV series on TV, watch them and sell them again on eBay. So, the cost to me is media rate postage $3 and the auction fees. That comes to about 25 cents an episode for “Desperate Housewives”, etc.
