Ralphs Double-Coupon Program Takes a Hit

Tuesday June 24, 2008
Ralphs supermarket customers may be getting some bad news. The supermarket chain based in Los Angeles will be dropping its double-coupon policy, from doubling coupons with the face value of up to $1 or more, to only doubling coupons valued at 50 cents or less. This change in policy comes at a bad time for shoppers using coupons to help offset the rise in food prices.

The new coupon policy goes into effect beginning tomorrow, June 24, 2008. Shoppers redeeming a coupon for .60 cents today will receive a reduction of $1.20 off their grocery bill. Tomorrow they will receive $1 subtracted from their bil for the same coupon. According to the Los Angeles Times, "any coupons for more than 50 cents but less than $1 will only increase to $1."

The company adapted this new policy in its San Diego stores in May of this year.

As disappointing as this change will be for many shoppers, it is still a pretty good deal considering many grocery store chains have ended double-coupon days in exchange for the supposed customer loyalty discounts. By combining meal planning, coupon clipping, utilizing weekly ads and shopping sales, shoppers at the Ralph supermarkets can still save bundles on the cost of food.

I have noticed that Ralph’s store almost every week would have an item on sale for an excellent price, and the same item nearby for a regular, or even sale price, much higher than in the other location. Then when you buy the item it is charged at a full price , 2-3 times higher, and they hope you’d accept that. If you do not, they do a “price check” and tell you - “look, this item is on sale for $9.99, not $3.79″. The item is exactly the same, volume/brand/quantity/ID number. But, they say, ” we are out of ” the cheaper one. Or “the quantity is wrong”. But now they are so bold that everything is the same but they just don’t give you and explanation. I have watched this happen to poor senior citizens that are forced to give their last penny to get the medicine they need, that costs them triple of what they came to the store ready to pay. And now it happened to me several times - and all they say -”We can give you a 1800 number to call” - and which idiot is going to call such a number to waste another hour out of their life. Even homeless value their time and emotional life more that speaking to a computer about “leaving a customer comment” for 30 minutes.
THIS IS AN OBVIOUS SCAM, NOT AN INNOCENT MISTAKE, AND WE ALL KNOW THAT. THIS HAPPENED MORE TIMES TO US IN THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS THAN IN ALL OF OUR LIVES BEFORE. WE SHOULD NOT JUST TAKE IT BUT NEED TO SPEAK UP.
I, PERSONALLY, WILL AVOID PLACES LIKE THAT, AND WILL SPEAK FOR THE WEAK AND POOR PEOPLE I SEE COUNTING PENNIES TO PAY UP TO RICH FAT SUPERMARKETS.
