ICOM Information & Communications (ICOM) conducted a recent survey of 1,529 U.S. shoppers to determine if the recession-like economy influences coupon usage. According to the survey, 67 percent of those surveyed said they are much more likely, or somewhat more likely (22 percent) to use coupons during a recession.

Income did not make a significant difference to respondents, with 68 percent of those earning less than $50,000 a year saying they are much more likely or somewhat more likely to use coupons in a recession, compared to 67 percent for those earning more than $50,000.

Also, 58 percent of respondents said their coupon use would increase if they could download a coupon from the Internet and have it automatically connected to an electronically swiped frequent shopper card.

"The consumer incentive certainly is there,” said Peter Meyers, ICOM marketing vice president. “Look at it this way: households of two adults and two children who use coupons wisely can save 25% on their grocery bill annually, without cutting purchases. That saves $2,400 a year based on a typical $800 a month grocery spend, which outstrips the $1,800 economic stimulus check this family has coming in May from Washington."

$800.00/mth grocery bill a month Ha! What about us that have a grocery bill of $300.00 or less a month. the coupons on the net don’t speak to us!

I agree with Kathi. If I spent $800 a month on groceries I wouldn’t be able to pay my other bills. I rarely use coupons preferring store brands when on sale. There are only a few things that I buy with coupons because I can’t find a cheaper comparable product i.e. shampoo, conditioner, etc. I usually shop at Save-a-lot or Aldi’s depending on which direction I’m going when I need to shop.

I don’t know where people are finding all these grocery coupons at. I usually only find coupons for stuff like shampoo, shaving cream, etc….usually the most expensive brand! I usually do better buying a less expensive brand on sale.
