20 Ways to Cut the Cost of Shopping - Tip #18
Shop at Stores that Match Competitor's Prices

By Donna L Montaldo, About.com

Many stores freely advertise that they will match their competitor's prices on specific items. It is an easy way to build customer confidence and is not taken advantage of by most consumers. Usually, to qualify for any price difference, the consumer has to produce a current advertisement showing the exact item at a lower price.

Examples of stores that offer this service:

  • Office Depot - They will match the price within 14 days of your purchase.

  • Office Max - If you find a lower price at any office product superstore on a new identical item, within 14 days after your OfficeMax purchase and they will give you 115% of the difference (up to $55.00).

  • Staples - If you find a lower price within 14 days of your Staples purchase, they will give you 110% of the difference.

  • Sears - If you find a lower price on an identical branded item with the same features currently available for sale at another local retail store, Sears will match that price plus give you 10% of the difference, within 30 days after, your purchase.

  • Home Depot - If you should find a lower price from a legitimate local competitor on an identical item they stock, they will beat it by 10% (excludes closeouts, liquidations and clearance items.) If you find a lower price from a competitor on the Internet on an identical item we stock, they will match the Internet price (excludes closeouts, liquidations, and clearance items)at your local Home Depot.
