About Malco Theatres

Founded in February 1915, Malco Theatres corporate headquarters is located in Memphis, Tennessee. It is a fourth-generation family owned and operated movie theater chain that celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2015.

Today, Malco Theatres owns and operates 33 theater locations with over 340 screens across the mid-South. Malco also operates three bowling centers and a family entertainment center in southern Louisiana and a family entertainment center in Oxford, Mississippi.

Innovators in Theater Design

During the early 1970s, Malco Theatres built the Highland Quartet, a quartet (a four-screen theater) in Memphis. At the time, there were very few four screen theaters across the country and none in Tennessee. The Highland Quartet remained opened until 2005.

The company opened its first multiplex in 1987. The Winchester Court Cinema in Memphis was designed with eight screens, although when the theater first opened only three screens were available. The theater remained opened until 2008.

The Majestic Theatre in Memphis was built in 1997. It is the one and only Malco Theatre megaplex. It opened with 11 screens and expanded to 20 screens in 1998. The theater is still opened today.

Almost Sold

Throughout the years, Malco Theatres came close to being sold two times. In 1969, Cinerama, Inc. of New York announced it was going to buy the 50-theater chain for $10 million, but the sale never materialized.

In 1986, Malco Theatres agreed to sell its 38 locations to Commonwealth Amusements Corp., out of Kansas City, Missouri. The sale fizzled, and four years later United Artist bought most of Commonwealth Amusements theaters.
