Are You a Smart Grocery Shopper? Question #10
Do you watch the prices being scanned when checking out at the grocery store?

Answer Choices:

  • No. I'm usually too busy unloading groceries onto the counter.
  • No. I figure mistakes are made both ways - sometimes against me, sometimes for me. It all washes out in the end.
  • No. I don't like to slow down the line and keep people behind me waiting.
  • Yes. I also unload the sale items last so that I can watch the prices.
Best Answer: Yes. I also unload the sale items last so that I can watch the prices.

According to consumerworld.org, two out of 100 grocery items scanned get recorded at the wrong price. Add that up over a year's time and scanning errors can end up being quite costly. It always pays to keep an eye on the scanner. If you feel like you are holding up the line, at least scan the receipt before you leave the store. You can just push your cart away from the counter a bit, but to where the cashier can see you. If you spot a problem, ask for it to be corrected, even if it is a small amount.
