Freezing Food - Is Freezer Burn Unsafe?

By Donna L Montaldo, About.com

Question: Freezing Food - Is Freezer Burn Unsafe?
Answer: Food with freezer burn is not unsafe, but merely dry where the burn exists. It is caused by air reaching the food and it has a leathery gray-brown texture. Food with minor freezer burn can be eaten, but the portions with the burn should be cut away. This can be done before or after you cook the food. When extreme freezer burn appears on frozen food it should be discarded for quality reasons.
