One day, after going to several garage sales, she came home with an old desk that had been so badly damaged on the top, that it was beyond repair. We could not imagine what plans she had for this ugly desk but she kept silent, took it out to the yard, and began hammering away at the top until it finally popped off. She then coated it was spray paint, stapled a colorful piece of fabric around it, and stood proudly beside it.
We were still quite confused as to its purpose until she crawled under it, and up popped her hand with a puppet on it. This became our permanent puppet stage, which we spent hundred of hours playing with for years after when visiting with our own children.
Eventually we also had a huge collection of handmade puppets. We took small shopping bags, turned them upside down, and painted the characters on the side of the bag. This simple and low-cost method of puppet making suited our needs perfectly.
