To make the trivia game of words and definitions, she would supply my two sisters and me with three different colors of index cards. Since there were three of us, all ranging two years apart in age, she would make up a sheet of words and definitions that challenged our specific age group.
We were then given each others sheet of words, and one set of the colored cards. We cut a word and its definition from the sheet and glued it to the index card until all words were on a card. Using crayons, we would draw a clue that related to the words definition on the other side of the index card. After all that was completed, we would begin playing the game.
Drawing an index card out from our age group pile, we would hand it to the person sitting on our right. They would read the word and we would have to spell it and define it. We were awarded a dime for each correct answer and given many opportunities to get the answers right.
The goal was to put $2.00 in our pockets by the time the game ended. At that point, if time permitted, we would head off to the ice cream shop to spend our $2.00 or put it in our piggybanks for safe keeping.
This was a great activity for improving our pronunciation, word usage, and it was a ton of fun! I have very fond memories of my mother whispering the correct pronunciation of a "big" word into my ear, as I read out my older sisters words. This game always seemed to end in a lot of laughter not to mention the ice cream was always a great treat!
