When butterfly day rolled around, she would set out a sheet for each of us to paint on. We would spot a butterfly that we wished to look like, and go about painting the sheet to match the wings. Once finished, my mother would cut our sheet into a half-moon shape and we would glue them around bent wing-shaped coat hangers. Once each wing was complete, my mother would attach them to a dow rod and run it down our backs. We would then follow our chosen butterfly around the yard until we were exhausted.
Many times our chosen butterfly vanished before we finished making our wings, but that was okay. We had fun anyway being outside in the fresh air and pretending to be a butterfly.
