Put on a Play

Without a doubt, this was one of our favorite activities to do as kids!

By Donna L Montaldo, About.com

Putting on a play always brought hours of enjoyment into our home. My mother would provide us with the play that we would perform and help us with our rather elaborate costumes. She had an old trunk full of dress-up clothes, jewelry, old hats, wigs, and shoes, all of which she purchased from garage sales and thrift stores over time. Once properly dressed for our character, we would each receive a copy of the play with our individual lines highlighted.

We would create our mini-stage by draping an old pair of curtains across a doorway, which of course we would step out from once the play began. The stage itself, was set up by placing the dining room chairs, back side showing, in a semi-circle, then taking sheets and drawing scenery on them and placing them over the chairs as a backdrop. It would then be left up to us to practice our lines, arrange our music, and get ready for curtain call.

We would perform our play for anyone willing to sit and watch us, including the family dog
