One of the most popular stores among deal hunters for finding big savings on every day products such as toothpaste, razors, candy, groceries and other similar products is Walgreens' drugstores. However, figuring out how to maximize how much you can save can get confusing.

There are different types of coupons and different policies which match the coupons. Also, coupons and deals at Walgreens differ depending on where you live. What goes on sale in New York may not go on sale in Florida.

Below you will find the basics about the Walgreens coupon policies and there is also a step-by-step tutorial that gets more involved in matching coupons and utilizing the Walgreens website to help you plan your couponing trip. But before doing the tutorial it helps to start off by understanding the different ways you can save at Walgreens.

Register Rewards

Walgreens Register Rewards are Catalina coupons which print up separately from your register receipt after you purchase qualifying items. The Register Rewards can be used similar to cash on your next purchase, although there are some restrictions.

Catalina machines are generally programmed to print one Register Reward coupon for one qualifying item. If you purchase more than one of the same qualifying items per transaction, you will only receive one Register Reward coupon.

In order to get more than one Register Reward coupon when purchasing more than one of the same qualifying items, request that the each item be rung up on a separate transaction. If you purchase different qualifying items in the same transaction you will receive one register reward for each item. In some areas the request for separate transactions may be denied.

Finding What Items Offer Register Rewards

The products that you can earn Register Rewards from are displayed on the Walgreen's Weekly advertisement and are often displayed with the product, price, amount you need to purchase and the Register Rewards you will receive. This information is displayed often in a "box" outlined in red.

You can shorten the hunt for products earning RRs by turning to the internet for help. For example, the Walgreens Coupon Matchups page lists the weekly sales and RRs along with coupon information you can apply when shopping.

Within the store you may find unadvertised items which offer Register Rewards. Reading the signage accompanying the items on the store shelves will help you find unadvertised Register Rewards.

Walgreen's Policy About Register Rewards

  • RRs will only print for in-stock merchandise during the promotional period.
  • RRs can only be earned for eligible items. There are no substitutions.
Redeeming Register Rewards
  • Customers redeeming a RRs against the same offer may not receive another RR.
  • RRs after they have expired.
  • The RRs coupon value cannot exceed the total purchase amount. No cash back and no cash value for RR coupon.
  • The number of manufacturer coupons, including RR manufacturer coupons, must not exceed the number of items in the transaction.
  • RRs will be forfeited if the qualifying merchandise is returned.
  • RRs can be redeemed for eligible items only. Ineligible items include:
    • Prescriptions
    • Tobacco products
    • Alcoholic beverages
    • Dairy products
    • Lottery tickets
    • Money orders/transfers
    • Transportation passes
    • Special event/entertainment tickets or passes
    • Postage stamps
    • Gift cards/phone cards/prepaid/Green DotTM cards
    • Prescription "Savings Club" memberships
    • Health care services, including immunizations
    • Any items prohibited by law

Instant Value Coupons

Instant Value Coupons (acronyms IVC, In-Ad) are found on advertised products in the Walgreens' Weekly advertisement. Like the RRs, they appear as a "box" outlined in red in the ads and display the product name, the selling price, the amount of the coupon and the final price.

Monthly Coupon Book

The Walgreen's Monthly Coupon Book can generally be found at the front of the store with the weekly ads. These coupons can be matched with manufacturers' coupons and on sale items for maximum savings.

You can also view the items on sale on the Monthly Coupon List for Walgreens page.

Walgreen's Coupon Policy

As of August 2010, a new Walgreen's Coupon Policy was posted at the Walgreens website. Here are the highlights:
  • "When purchasing a single item, Walgreens accepts one manufacturer coupon and applicable Walgreens coupon(s) for the purchase of a single item, unless prohibited by either coupon offer."

  • "The coupon amount must be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied. (For example, a $5.00 coupon for a $4.99 item will result in a $4.99 coupon value)."

  • "When items are featured in a Buy One, Get One Free (BOGO) promotion, up to two coupons can be used against the items being purchased, as long as the net price does not go below zero for the items being purchased."

  • "Walgreens accepts valid internet/print at home coupons."
It is a good idea to have a copy of the new coupon policy handy when you go shopping. As with most new policies, it takes time to get employees used to the changes. You can read or print the coupon policy here. I have a notebook of individual store's policies in my car, just in case I run into problems. I happily added this policy to my collection.

Picking the Right Time to Shop

Many times the best way to maximize your savings at Walgreens is to request that different items be rung up on separate transactions. Depending on how busy the store is sometimes determines how well that request is received by the employees. Try to shop during slow times like early in the morning or before closing. Also, checking out at the register by the cosmetic counter can sometimes help to avoid frustrating the Walgreen's employees.
