Buying Used and Surplus Building Supplies Can Cut the Cost of Your Next Remodel

By , About.com Guide

If you are planning on doing any remodeling in your home, you may want to see if there is a Habitat ReStore in your area. The Habitat ReStores are retail outlets with building supply products usually donated by contractors, demolition crews, building supply stores and individuals donating items in support of the Habitat for Humanity program.

Because the items are usually donated, the used and surplus building materials are deeply discounted and sold for a fraction of the normal prices. The average savings can run up to 60 percent savings.

What Do the Stores Carry?

Depending on the location and size of the community, the stores will often carry cabinetry, windows, interior and exterior doors, flooring, carpet, plumbing, wood trim and hardware items. In many locations customers can haggle down the prices, especially when making large purchases.

Habitat for Humanity ReStores raise money for their local community and in return the community benefits by having access to affordable building and decorating supplies, some of which might otherwise have been thrown away.

For a list of stores near you, visit the Habitat ReStore Directory Web page.
