BlockBuster Online Improves Subcription Program
Tuesday March 7, 2006
Blockbuster Online has doubled the amount of free in-store movie rentals for online subscribers. In the old plan Blockbuster online subscribers were permitted two free in-store movies as part of their subscription agreement. In February 2006, this was doubled and now subscribers can get one free in-store movie rental each week.
The previous monthly plan allowed subscribers to rent the "two per month" free rentals at the same time. The current “one weekly free rental coupon” can only be redeemed one at a time. Subscribers can opt to stay with the older plan or upgrade to the new plan.
This decision came after the company performed a consumer research survey. Blockbuster Inc determined that online subscribers wanted to be able to rent more in-store movies. The decision to include the one-a-week option sets Blockbuster apart from Netflix which can only offer online rentals to subscribers since they do not have any bricks-and-mortar stores.
