Lottery Winner Remains a Penny Pincher at Heart

Sunday October 23, 2005
Donna Anderson of Oregon was always on the lookout for a good deal. She clipped coupons and enjoyed shopping at Wal-Mart. Then Donna won the Oregon Lottery Megabucks jackpot of $18.2 million, two years ago, and unlike many lottery winners, she did not change her penny-pincher ways.

"I'm always on the lookout for the best deal," said Donna Anderson, who vowed with her husband not to let the lottery winnings change them. Even though the couple is millions richer, Anderson still clips coupons and shops at Wal-Mart.

The biggest changes in the Anderson's life was Donna, a teacher's assistant at Hermiston High School, quit her job and the couple bought a two-story home with a deck and a pool on four acres of land. They opted to get a 30-year mortgage rather than pay for the new house in cash.

Andy Anderson, a retired Hermiston police chief, worked as a long-haul trucker before winning the lottery. Today he owns a used truck and continues to work as a part-time truck driver.

"You never know how you're going to react if you reach this point," Andy Anderson said. "One day, you're John Q. Citizen and then you're a multimillionaire. It can be pretty overwhelming. But we vowed that we're not going to change who we are."

"We're pretty normal," said Donna Anderson. "We hope we're that way. I'm still a penny pincher at heart, and we treat people the same way. If friends or family need us, we're there."

They say that “money is the root of all evil”. That is very true in most cases, but it is nice to see that depite the enormous wealth that one may encounter, there are some people that know that what makes one happy is to leave this world knowing that you have changed even one persons’ life for the better. Thanks Donna.
