Save on Gas, Buy Groceries

Monday August 4, 2003
With gasoline prices still high in most areas of the U.S., one way that consumers can save is to buy groceries where retailers offer gasoline vouchers on selected items.

More than 800 grocery stores across the country use some form of the fuel reward program, which began about five years ago. Most of these grocery retailers also have adjoining gasoline stations, according to the Dayton Daily News.

Here's the plan works: purchase specific products that utilize the fuel reward program and when you check out you receive a voucher for 25 cents to $5 toward the purchase of gasoline -- either at the store's gas pumps or at other participating stations. You usually have up to 30 days to redeem the vouchers.

Some of the national brands offering discounts in the fuel reward program include Tropicana, Keebler, Colgate-Palmolive, Dole, Kellogg’s, Coca-Cola, Kraft, Frito-Lay, Northern, Gerber, Nabisco, Lipton, Quaker, Pillsbury, Arm & Hammer, Dannon, Kimberly-Clark and General Mills, according to the News.

Almost 98 percent of consumers who buy groceries also by gasoline, so it makes sense to take advantage of the fuel reward program, if a store in your area offers the program.
